Description

His installation, A Rainbow in the Sky, consists of 2,268 colorful striped flags suspended over this beautiful pedestrian square. The installation is free and open to the public.

Buren’s design is created especially for the elegant architectural space and introduces a rainbow of 10 colors with the flags like an open “ceiling” over visitors’ heads. The flags flutter in the breeze as they cast thousands of moving shadows on viewers below.

Buren’s 2007 art installation, A Colored Square in the Sky, was met with great critical success and led to his interest to return and create an entirely new work in the same location. Buren is one of France’s most famous contemporary artists, and the creator of such work as the internationally acclaimed Les colonnes de Buren at Le Palais Royal in Paris.

A Rainbow in the Sky is presented by One Colorado, Armory Center for the Arts, and FLAX, a Los Angeles-based foundation dedicated to fostering a better understanding of France through public and cultural art events. Additional support for Armory outdoor exhibitions is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.
